Murals, by definition, are already huge.
They plaster walls and create witnesses out of innocent bystanders. They splash color onto oft-ignored facades, giving life to the blank canvasses of our everyday. A non-profit, public art project is about to further amplify the power of paint. With the arrival of SHINE, art’s simple impact on a city’s aesthetic, residents, and visitors gets multiplied over and again, reinforcing a community’s place in a global conversation.
September 1st-12th, St. Petersburg, Florida — a culturally-diverse city already rich in public and private art — will become even more of a living, breathing, beautifully curated open-air museum thanks to muralists from Rome, Montreal, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Brooklyn who’ve made temporary camp in the SunSHINE City. They’re joined by the Bay area’s boldest artists and will all collectively speak to the community’s desire to spark a dialogue about how public art can revitalize underutilized assets and raise a city’s standard of artistic excellence and acceptance.
SubAp!’s general dillydally-ers have connected with SHINE’s team and its sponsors to try and wrap it all into a special edition — something you can hold while you’re being touched and engulfed by it all.
Here you can dive into exclusive content and interviews we couldn’t afford to put in print.
